St Mary's Loch Introduction: Based on the routes taken by Drovers many years ago, our "Drovers Route" tour takes us across the south of Scotland, a land ruled by a ruthless, lawless people who wreaked havoc and waged bloody tribal warfare and would stop at nothing to protect their land, their power, their property and their families, they ran by the name of Reivers "the Border Reivers." Thankfully life is more civilised now and the Drovers Route takes in some of the breathtaking scenery across moorland, forest and open country and traversing the gently undulating Borderlands, scenes of some of the Reivers’ bloodiest clashes. The route is run over two full days, Starting in the south east of Scotland, the Scottish Borders, "Sir Walter Scott Country" at our head office, Chain Bridge Farm, Melrose. From here we run the "West Drive" to Dumfries and Galloway staying overnight in the Portpatrick area, returning to the Borders the next day via the "East Drive"
Programme for the Drovers Route (382 Miles Approx) Day 1 The West Drive 185 miles: The day starts at 9am with a gathering at our head office in Melrose, then after a fuel stop if necessary at Selkirk, we then travel westwards following the meandering valley of the Yarrow, passing scenic St Mary's Loch and on to Moffat, a Victorian spa town, where we stop off for refreshments, a leg stretch and the opportunity to be tourists. This takes us across to the Dumfries and Galloway region using quiet rural roads passing through several small villages till we arrive at Bruce’s Stone, where Robert The Bruce is reputed to have rested following the battle of Glentrool in 1307, where he defeated an English army by hurling boulders down the steep hillside on to the unsuspecting heads of the approaching troops. Moving on, we continue west on exposed wild country with wild goats wandering the moors, and head to Wigtown (Scotland’s Book Town, there are several bookshops if anyone wants to stop for a quick browse), and on to Bladnoch Distillery and visitor centre for a distillery tour, if you wish. After this we make our way to Port William, from where we head northwest towards Stranraer, finishing our day at Portpatrick where we stay overnight in our chosen accommodation.
The Samye Ling Buddhist Temple Day 2 The East drive 205 miles: Fresh from our overnight stopover and fuel stop, we head south on to the Mull of Galloway. This is the southernmost point of mainland Scotland and the view from the top of the lighthouse is well worth the effort. Ireland is easily seen, even on a cloudy day. Moving on along the coast we head for to an interesting leg stretch at the David Coulthard Museum and Pitstop Diner. After lunch we continue on heading for Kirkcudbright. From Kirkcudbright we continue on meandering our way east and northeast to John Paul Jones Cottage. This is a traditional cottage where John Paul Jones, the “Father of the American Navy” was born in 1747. Continue north, we may stop off at Sweetheart Abbey for refreshments if required. Moving on again we’re soon at Dumfries with fuel available, and shopping if time and inclination permits, or a visit to the Aviation Museum nearby. We now head for Lockerbie, there is the opportunity to end your tour here as there is access to the A74(M) south to Carlisle and the M6, or north to Glasgow, or Edinburgh (on the A701 from Moffat). From Lockerbie we head northeast to Eskdalemuir, and on to the Samye Ling Tibetan Centre. This is worth a stop even if it’s just to admire the architecture and colourful paintwork of the buildings – refreshments are available. Leaving Samye Ling, we head home to Selkirk, Melrose and back to your overnight accommodation, (subject to previous arrangement) or to head home. Please note that we have much more information, including prices, available on our CD and considerably much more when you make your booking, the above information is just a taster! General Information The theme of all our tours
on Scotland's country roads is for a relaxed and unhurried trip, taking in local scenery and points
of interest. The nature of the roads on our chosen trips does not
encourage "speeding bullets" so we're promoting a sedate, leisurely
introduction to the south of Scotland. Day/Evening prior to tour: If at all possible, we try to use this time to pick up any hire equipment such as bikes, helmets, and clothing etc. No earlier than midday and no later than 3pm.
