Programme for the Northumberland Raid (145 Miles Approx) This trip is a full day tour crossing the Border into Northumberland and giving us panoramic hilltop views of the Borders and North Northumberland, passing the vigorously defended Debatable Lands and Border Marches, scenes of bloody clan warfare. Starting from our head office in Melrose we head to Selkirk for a fuel stop if required. From there we go south on to Hawick, the largest town in the Borders, famous for its woollen and cashmere products. Hawick is also the home of the museums to the memories of the late Steve Hislop and Jimmie Guthrie, two famous motorcyclists. We leave the town heading for Shankend and Whitrope, where local railway enthusiasts are currently rebuilding part of the old line and are hoping to open a short stretch soon for short train trips. We continue our Journey now heading for Kielder . At the time of construction in the early 1980s, Kielder Water was the largest manmade body of water in Europe. The surrounding forestation was, at the time of planting, the largest manmade commercial forest in Europe. After a leg stretch and refreshment stop at the Visitor Centre we continue southeast, crossing the dam to view the always empty run-off channels and the settling pool at the foot of the dam. Back on the again twisty unclassified road, we follow the River North Tyne to Bellingham, through the village and northeast towards Otterburn. On the right we pass the army training camps on the moor and shortly on the left we pass Catcleuch Reservoir, and more commercial forest . The next point of interest is Carter Bar and the border between England and Scotland. This is a must-see view to the north - the whole of the Scottish Borders is spread out before you. Magnificent photo opportunity! Back on the road again we continue north to Jedburgh, notice the ruined abbey on the left. Jedburgh also has a castle, now a small local museum, much fought over and rebuilt by the Scots and English, and Mary Queen of Scots’ House. If time permits, a stop could be made at Jedburgh for a browse and refreshments. Shortly after leaving Jedburgh, we turn right for Kelso, this is a mixed road with straights and bends. We take a short tour through the old market town of Kelso, with its impressive (cobbled) square (slippery when wet) and continue out of the town past the impressive gates for Floors Castle, heading for St Boswells, and back to Melrose.
