A braw day at Kielder Programme for the Northumberland Raid (145 miles) This trip is a full day tour crossing the Border into Northumberland and giving us panoramic hilltop views of the Borders and North Northumberland, passing the vigorously defended Debatable Lands and Border Marches, scenes of bloody clan warfare. Starting from Whitmuir Hall we head to Selkirk, and on to Hawick, the largest town in the Borders, famous for its woollen and cashmere products. Hawick is also the home of the museums to the memories of the late Steve Hislop and Jimmie Guthrie, two famous motorcyclists. We continue our Journey now heading for Kielder. At the time of construction in the early 1980s, Kielder Water was the largest manmade body of water in Europe. The surrounding forestation was, at the time of planting, the largest manmade commercial forest in Europe. Back
again on the twisty unclassified road, we follow the River North Tyne and on to Otterburn. On the right we pass the
army training camps on the moor and shortly on the left we pass Catcleuch
Reservoir, and more commercial forest . The next point of interest is Carter
Bar and the border between England and Scotland. This is a must-see view to the
north - the whole of the Scottish Borders is spread out before you. Magnificent
photo opportunity!
Back on the road again we continue north to Jedburgh, If time permits, a stop could be made at Jedburgh for a browse and refreshments. Shortly after leaving Jedburgh, we head for Kelso, then St Boswells, and back to our accommodation (Whitmuir Hall etc). Please note that we have much more information, including prices, available on our CD and considerably much more when you make your booking, the above information is just a taster!
One of our German/Belgian groups at the Northumberland border to Scotland General Information The theme of all our tours
on Scotland's country roads is for a relaxed and unhurried trip, taking in local scenery and points
of interest. The nature of the roads on our chosen trips does not
encourage "speeding bullets" so we're promoting a sedate, leisurely
introduction to Scotland and in particular, the Borders. The Northumberland Raid can be incorporated/merged with any of our other day tours. Prices for individual or joint tours are available on enquiry; accommodation options and costs can also be made available on request, if required. For information on bike/equipment hire and other conditions of the tours, please refer to our Motor Cycle Tours home page.
